What is a retracted stoma?

A retracted stoma is where the stoma sinks below the skin. As long as your stoma still behaves normally you shouldn’t be worried. However, it can prevent the flange from forming a good seal which may lead to leakages. This can be more of a concern if you have ileostomy or urostomy. This is because the output is looser and more likely to leak out. If you’re worried that your stoma may have retracted, then speak to your Stoma Care Nurse. A retracted stoma can be easily managed with the right products.

What products can help with a retracted stoma?

If you have a retracted stoma, a pouch with a convex flange like Aura Plus Soft Convex may help. The convex flange applies gentle pressure to bring the stoma out into the pouch and improves the seal. You may also find that using a belt with a Soft Convex pouch can also help the stoma to protrude further into the bag and provide support.

You can also use stoma seals like Hyperseal washers which are designed to mould around and provide extra security to pouches applied to uneven, creviced or retracted skin. A filler paste like Welland Stoma Paste can help to smooth minor dips and creases in the skin.
