Jim* is a 60-year-old heating engineer. After being diagnosed with colon cancer, Jim underwent surgery to have a colostomy formed and has struggled with physical and psychological challenges.

Andrew*, a retired man with type 1 diabetes and an ileostomy received treatment for mucocutaneous separation which was observed during an initial post-operative review in a community setting.

Ms Orange* is a 78-year-old lady who had an end-colostomy formed in 2020 following a total abdominal hysterectomy. Ms Orange has a large, rounded stomach where the stoma is poorly spouted and flush to the skin. When sat upright, the stoma sits within a recessed area, and this can be exaggerated by movement.

Ms Yellow* had an end colostomy formed following an emergency Hartmann’s procedure for perforation due to diverticular disease. Ms Yellow had no previous bowel related medical history, however, there was a history of falls which affected her stoma care.

Mrs White* had an end ileostomy formed following a panproctocolectomy for ascending colon cancer. Past medical history includes Ulcerative Colitis and a previous knee surgery.

Linneke, not her real name, is 50 years old and works as an ambulance nurse. She recently had surgery to form a colostomy after years of dealing with slow-transit constipation with a Malone stoma, also known as a Malone antegrade continence enema (MACE). Although adjusting to the stoma was challenging, Linneke now experiences significantly less pain and has regained much of her independence, managing her stoma care on her own.
