For patients who are not able to empty their bladder whether at all, only partially or have had surgery that has made it necessary, intermittent self-catheterisation can have many benefits. You will learn about these in this course, including what it is, when it should or shouldn’t be used, and how to confidently support patients who are using it.
Fundamentals of Intermittent Self-Catheterisation
Fundamentals of Intermittent Self-Catheterisation (ISC) Course
This course provides an introductory understanding of intermittent self-catheterisation (ISC) in continence care. It aims to equip healthcare professionals with foundational knowledge about ISC, its benefits to patients, and why it is considered the gold standard in catheterisation.
Who is this course for?
This course is designed for healthcare professionals who assist patients with continence needs using intermittent catheters, whether in hospitals, community settings, or care homes. Please note: this course is not intended as competency-based training for those beginning to perform ISC.
What can I expect to learn from this course?
The course is divided into four modules that you can work through at your own pace:
- Introduction and Objectives: This module covers the terminology around ISC, explaining what intermittent catheterisation is and the main functions of the bladder, including its anatomy.
- Catheterisation: Learn when intermittent catheterisation might be appropriate for patients, the advantages of this method, and the contraindications to consider. This module also covers the main types of ISC catheters.
- Patient Interaction: The module provides approaches for discussing ISC with patients, key points for risk assessment, and considerations for patient choice and cultural beliefs. It also addresses common concerns patients may have when starting ISC.
- Techniques and Anatomy: A detailed look at male and female anatomy and the technique for performing ISC. This module includes short videos demonstrating how patients can perform ISC themselves.
Finally, test your knowledge with a short quiz to consolidate your learning. On completion of the course you will receive a certificate which can help to support NMC revalidation requirements for registered nurses.
