Appeel is the market leading no-sting medical adhesive remover range, made with a specially formulated blend of healthcare-grade silicones.
The Appeel Range
The Appeel range contains two of CliniMed’s flagship medical adhesive removal products, Appeel Advance and Appeel Sterile. Appeel Advance was brought to market in 2003 under the name Appeel and was CliniMed’s first silicone-based medical adhesive remover. In 2010 CliniMed released the UK’s first sterile medical adhesive remover, Appeel Sterile and remains the only one available in the UK to this day.
Both Appeel Advance and Appeel Sterile contain healthcare-grade silicones which allow for the quick and easy removal of dressings and appliances while reducing the risk of medical adhesive-related skin injuries (MARSIs). The range is alcohol-free so there’s no sting when they’re applied and they don’t dry out the skin.
The healthcare-grade silicones in the Appeel range evaporate quickly so, there’s no need to wait to apply a fresh dressing or appliance. They don’t leave behind any residue so won’t affect the adhesives in any dressings or appliances applied to the area.
Types of Medical Adhesive Removers
Until the early 2000s there were two options when it came to medical adhesive removers: alcohol-based and oil-based. Alcohol-based removers work by dissolving the adhesive however, they can sting especially where the skin is sensitive or broken. Alcohol can also dry out the skin and cause irritation making it unsuitable for those with fragile skin.
Oil-based removers work by lubricating the adhesive, making it less sticky so the dressing or medical appliance can be peeled away from the skin. Unfortunately, this type of remover can leave behind a greasy residue which needs to be removed before an adhesive device or dressing can be applied which can be inconvenient. Some of the oils used in these removers can also cause allergic reactions.
The development of silicone-based medical adhesive removers provided an option that didn’t sting or leave a residue. Silicone-based removers work by temporarily changing the surface energy of the skin which disrupts the adhesive properties of the device or dressing. This allows for it to be peeled away from the skin quickly, without pain and with less chance of causing MARSIs.
Appeel Advance
Repeatedly applying and removing stoma bags can be hard on the skin. It can lead to irritation and damage which can make the experience painful. Appeel Advance Medical Adhesive Remover is non-sterile and helps to protect the skin around the stoma and reduces the risk of damage. It dries quickly without leaving a residue so you can apply a fresh stoma bag right away.
Appeel Sterile
Appeel Sterile is the only sterile medical adhesive remover available in the UK. It makes the removal of adhesive medical devices and dressings quick and easy, without causing MARSIs. The formula containing healthcare-grade silicones is inert so it can be applied to both intact and injured skin. It’s ideal for those with fragile skin such as infants and older people. It can even be used to manage the distressing and painful condition of epidermolysis bullosa.
