This course has been designed to offer healthcare professionals an introductory understanding of stoma care focussing on positive patient outcomes from pre-surgery, through to discharge and patient self-care.
Who is the Stoma Care Course for?
This course is suitable for all healthcare professionals including carers, who may care for someone with a stoma. It is also suitable for new Stoma Care Nurses and student nurses.
What can I expect from the course?
The course is split across 4 core modules and focuses on positive patient outcomes. Each module will guide and empower you to understand and practice the fundamentals of stoma care. Interactive elements will reinforce each module’s learning, and the course ends with a quiz and certificate of completion.
The introduction explores the main types of stoma, providing you with a brief overview of how and why a stoma might be formed and introduces you to the different types of stoma pouch.
We then outline the role of the Specialist Stoma Care Nurse (SCN) and look at how the SCN works with other healthcare professionals to support the patient pathway. The post-operative period and stoma management explores the fundamentals of successful care following surgery, one of the most important periods for successful patient outcomes.
The final part explores the steps required to discharge a patient and how to help patients care for their stoma and return to their normal lifestyle.
