Mr D N from Bartley

‘During 2001 I had colostomy surgery. One of my major concerns
during the early post-operational months was the disposal of
contaminated blue bags – I did not like the idea of a ‘special’
bin that could be seen by others and may smell in the summer
months. However, my main problem was away from home,
especially when staying in a hotel or with friends. Placing blue
bags in their toilet waste bin was embarrassing.
I started to explore the colostomy products on the market and
received samples from various suppliers. However, all appliances
were very much the same.
Then I attended a CliniMed workshop and was introduced to the
toilet-flushable appliances. I now use nothing else and enjoy a
lifestyle I thought was never again going to be possible.
The outer cover is waterproof and dries quickly making it ideal
for swimming or taking a shower. I attend a gym twice a week
and eat and drink what I like. In fact, I can participate in any
activity, and work a few days a month.
I can’t imagine life without toilet-disposable appliances and feel
if these were not available I would have to perform irrigation
more frequently, and this can be very time-consuming.’

Mrs L S from Melrose

'I have had my ileostomy for 18 years. My life changed forever
when at the age of 24, I had to undergo surgery for Ulcerative
Colitis resulting in a permanent stoma. Devastated was an
understatement.
I had been using Dansac and Convatec pouches but found
disposal of these a nightmare particularly when staying away
from home. I would pack my used pouch in a carrier bag and
dispose of them at a public toilet or waste bin when no-one was
looking. While browsing through the internet I found the site
for Freestyle Flushable and asked them to send me a sample. It
took me a couple of days to get used to it but it’s really simple
and it flushes away complete with flange in one go. The odour
when changing is now minimal also.
The quality of my life has greatly improved, I feel less stressed
about disposal and odour and feel I can now accept invitations
to stay with business colleagues or friends at their homes.
I lead a very active lifestyle and also publish and edit my
own magazine. Freestyle Flushable has made travel and work
so much easier. There is now no need to carry perfume in my
handbag due to the filter integrated within the pouch.
I would thoroughly recommend the Freestyle Flushable
to anyone, it really does improve your life and you are also
helping the environment too!’

Mrs K B from Harrogate

‘I have been a colostomist since June 1996. I was discharged
from hospital using a standard closed colostomy pouch and
was given advice from my stoma nurse on how to dispose of it
– cut off the bottom of the pouch, squeeze the contents into
the toilet and bag the pouch before putting it in the household
waste bin. I was not altogether satisfied with this, but had no
alternative.
In September 1997 my stoma nurse invited me to a stoma open
day, which all the stoma companies would be attending. The
nurse told me about a new innovative pouch that could be
disposed of by flushing it down the toilet. I started using the
flushable pouch and have not looked back since! It’s much
cleaner to use, the odour is reduced during pouch change and
it is so much more convenient.
Having a colostomy has not held me back in any way. I was 75
when I had my surgery in 1996 and was sadly widowed early
in 1998, however I have continued to enjoy some fabulous
holidays, including cruises and trips all over the world.
I lead a very busy and fulfilling life, as an 86 year old
and continue to enjoy trips out and maintaining
my lovely home in a very picturesque part of
North Yorkshire.’
