Stoma Care

Living With Your Stoma

The first few weeks

The time it takes to recover from stoma surgery will vary from person to person but in general it is likely to take around 6-8 weeks to get back to the usual level of activity and around 3 months to recover completely.

Resuming normal activity

After a while you will begin to feel physically stronger and you will gradually be able to resume normal activity including social events, and perhaps getting back to work.  You may even be thinking of taking a short holiday away from home.

The information in this section gives advice on many aspects of daily life. However 'Support Services' will provide you with sources of further information and advice including venues for ‘walk in’ stoma care nurse clinics.
