You do not need a special appliance but some people do like to wear a smaller pouch for swimming. If you wear a pouch with a filter this should be covered by a filter cover to stop water spoiling the filter.

Yes it is safe from 2-3 days after your operation and, unless advised otherwise, you can bathe or shower with your stoma pouch on or off. If you keep your bag in place while you are bathing and do not intend changing it afterwards, protect the charcoal filter with a filter cover (sticky patches normally supplied by the manufacturer in your box of stoma bags).

A food blockage results in minimal watery or no output from the stoma. In most cases it will resolve spontaneously but if symptoms persist you should seek medical advice. For the first few weeks following surgery, and later if you experience repeated obstructions, you may be advised to modify your fibre intake. For more information on blockages click here.

Most ostomates can eat a very varied diet, leaving out only the things which upset them as individuals. As a general rule however, Ileostomates should avoid things which could cause blockage, such as sweetcorn, mushrooms, celery and nuts.

This is a problem that most ostomates have at some time or other. There are a number of foods you can eat which should alleviate it. Yoghurt, charcoal biscuits, fennel tea, and peppermint oil capsules all help to settle down flatulence.
