HPV immunisation programme
July 4th 2008
A national HPV immunisation programme will be introduced for all girls aged 12-13 years starting in autumn 2008. The national immunisation programme will use the HPV vaccine CervarixTM and will protect girls against infection with HPV 16 and 18. There will be a catch-up campaign for girls aged up to 18 years. In England the catch up campaign will be conducted over 3 years starting in Autumn 2008 targeting 17-18 year olds.
Primary Care Trusts will plan how to deliver the vaccination programme locally. The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has advised that HPV vaccination would be most efficiently delivered through schools. The Director of Immunisation Professor David Salisbury stated; "The benefits of introducing this vaccine into the national immunisation programme will be felt by women and their families for generations to come. The vaccine protects against the viruses that cause about 70% of cervical cancers.
Vaccine manufacturer
GlaxoSmithKline has received a three-year contract from the United Kingdom's Department of Health to supply the country's immunisation program with its human papillomavirus vaccine CervarixTM.
