What to Wear
Loose fitting clothing and tracksuits may be best at first as your abdomen may feel swollen and tight. In a few weeks you will be able to wear your usual clothes, although sometimes waistlines may need to be adjusted slightly.
- Tight fitting clothes can still be worn
- Trousers with pleats may give more room across the stoma for men
- Braces for men are recommended if belts go across the stoma
- Underwear should either go under or completely over the stoma
- Patterned swimwear may be more flattering for women
- Some companies design specific clothing for ostomates including underwear, swimwear and high-waisted trousers
- You can still wear a support garment after stoma surgery
Swimwear
- Swimwear is available for ostomates from White Rose and CUI. Please call The CliniMed Careline on 0800 0360100 to request a copy of either catalogue
- Use a cap or mini pouch for swimming – samples available upon request
- Use HydroFrame flange extender or water proof tape to ‘picture frame’ your flange
- Swimsuits with busy patterns camouflage appliances
- A tight garment under your swimsuit can hold your stoma bag in place
- Use filter cover when swimming
